Mrs. Hicks Second Grade Class

Mrs. Hicks Homework Philosophy

In first grade your child should have gotten into the homework routine and had occasional projects.  As an older second grader, homework and expectations rise along with ability.  Each child will have nightly homework Monday through Thursday, and occasional projects will be assigned.  As a second grader your child should not be spending more than 20 minutes on Spelling and Math, and then additional 15 minutes reading a book(s).  If you find that your child is spending an extended amount of time n a particular assignment, please let me know.  I also understand that on rare occasions there are family emergencies, illnesses, or just plain old bad days.  Please write me a note explaining why the homework wasn’t completed and I will work with you to turn it in later.  Otherwise, a letter below the line will be given.

It is my philosophy that homework is a VERY IMPORTANT review of what we’ve worked on in class that day.  I will not send home activities that your child is unfamiliar with; they will always be a continuation of what we are covering in our class activities.  I also believe that working WITH your child and helping him/her find mistakes is an excellent way to do homework.  This does not mean, “do the homework” for them.  It’s very important that homework be an accurate account of what the child can or cannot do.  The main goal behind homework should be to have a quick review to reinforce what we learned that day in class.  Without this extra practice your child will fall behind.

Please remember, your child is responsible for copying down his/her homework assignment before leaving each day.  Plenty of time and guidance are given to complete this task.  He/she will also be responsible for turning in their homework folder daily, with all completed work inside, with their name on top of each assignment.
