Mrs. Hicks Second Grade Class

Parent Pointer

1. Read to and with your child every day!  Reading together builds a special bond with your child.

2. Select books appropriate for the child's developmental age.

3. Seat the child close to you, and hold the book so that the child can easily see the pictures.

4.  Help your child link the story to his or her own experience through discussion after reading.

5. Encourage your child to act out the story.  Drama will increase the child's understanding of the story and increase interest.

6. Read in a lively, storytelling manner.

7. Children are never too young to be read to.  Children are never too old to be read to.

8. Take your child to the library, and let him or her select books for reading aloud.

9. When reading poetry, read a bit slower than with prose.  Use your natural voice, but with a tone that suits the poem.

10. Remember to be enthusiastic and have fun while sharing books with your child.
